Behind the Scenes
Director's Note
Ever since taking Theatre History at AU in 2019, Maggie Rocha has had a fascination with satyr plays. We had to end our time in the Rudes by bringing the one-woman version of it that we’ve joked about for years to life. Maggie plays all the characters of this tale like she has always dreamed of! In the spirit of satyrs, the party animals of Greek mythology, we first and foremost wanted to have fun with this project and play up the comedy of the rhymes and situations within this story about Apollo and the satyrs' quest to find his lost cows. This take on Searching Satyrs will have a DIY, homemade feel to create a “home video” version of the play with multiple angles and lots of homemade costumes for each different character. Maggie improvised a whole retelling of the story in the style of Drunk History. Then, using our backyard patio as a movie set, we spent a week after finals re-enacting and recording those moments as the characters in the play. We hope you enjoy it!
ABOUT SEARCHING SATYRS by Sophocles: Apollo has lost his cows. He can't find them. Silenus and the satyrs set out to find them, but find themselves mysteriously entranced by the sound of a new musical insrument....created by the recently born Hermes. Will Apollo find his cows? Or will the satyrs just party it up until the cows come home?
